Spellcheckers

One of the early decisions I made on OnceMarked Blogs is not to enable spellchecking on the article input surface.

I know, spellchecking is a very simple switch to turn on, and in practice it should also be quite handy to give you an indication of what you spell wrong.

It is also very limited. For example, "enshittification" has become an issue everywhere, this word, according to spellcheckers, is wrong, but we all know how legitimate that word is.

Spellcheckers don't catch grammar mistakes, nor it should be.

So to really fix those problems, a more involved checker would be used, which will check everything including your use of passive verbs, bad structure, easily confused phrases. At that point, the app would be bloated and get in the way of writing.

Writing should be a freeing process, and when you are writing, you are putting ideas on the page, without judgements and interjections.

Of course, you can go ahead and edit after writing, but that's a separate process.

English is my second language, but even when I write in my native language, I would still make mistakes in grammar.

But they don't matter.

Coincidentally, there has been a new group of services that automatically add grammar and spelling mistakes to AI generated articles.

So we are really killing two stones with one bird here.

No spellchecking, free grammar mistakes organically appearing everywhere.
